Week 22: Lorianne Dicaire

Entrepreneur

Please tell us a little bit about yourself.

My name is Lorianne Dicaire, I am 30 years old. I have been playing roller derby for the past 10 years, I am a member of the Montreal New Skids on the Block (Montreal roller derby A team) as well as the Canadian roller derby team. I was always pretty active even before roller derby, I played soccer, I have a black belt in Karate and I also snowboard and skateboard anytime I can!

I have worked in retail for many, many years as a manager, district manager and mostly as a shoe buyer and designer. Last year I have decided to start my own business with a co-worker and teammate. So, we are now the proud owners of a great skate shop specialized in roller derby in Montreal.

How has sport helped you develop skills for your work today?

Sport is really what brought discipline and order to my life since a very young age. I wasn’t always exactly a perfect child/teen, but sport was always the one thing I gave my 100% in and I honestly can say it saved my life!

It taught me to adapt to different situations, work with many different people, personalities and it for sure taught me teamwork, perseverance, and patience just to name a few things. I also am very shy so it helped me open up and communicate with others.

What qualities in a teammate for sport or work do you look for? Why?

Honesty, open minded, hard work, and compassion.

What is one piece of advice would you have for young female athletes today?

Never give up and please don’t listen to anyone that tells you your gender will stop you from being the best at anything! Gender isn’t a thing, the future is non-binary and you can do anything you put your mind to, no matter your gender!
