This is a unique opportunity offered to female student-athletes in high school to learn from stories told by accomplished women in their various fields. Our dynamic speakers are leaders and key contributors within their community. They will have 15 minutes tell their story and share advice from their sport experience. Each talk will engage the audience and be open to questions. Topics include resilience, adversity, leadership, and much more. Students will have an opportunity to network with guest speakers during and after the event.
Parents, guardians and community members are welcome to attend the event but are asked to sit in a separate section. Front seats are reserved for female-student athletes.

RACHEL FLANAGAN & KATIE MORA Championship Culture: Defining Your Legacy Rachel Flanagan is currently in her 11th season as head coach of the women's hockey program at the University of Guelph and has won two OUA titles while qualifying for nationals each of the past three seasons. In 2016-17, Rachel was named the OUA Coach of the Year for women's hockey. It marked the fourth time in the past five seasons that she had earned the honour. Rachel was also named the top female coach in the OUA from across all OUA-governed sports. She graduated from University of Guelph in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Kinetics. During her playing career as a Gryphon, she captained the women’s hockey team for two of her five years as well as being named to the OUA All-Star Team. Following graduation, she received her Bachelor of Education at Lakehead University. Rachel is an NCCP High-Performance Level 2 coach and has plans to complete her Masters in the coming years. She has also played and coached at a number of different levels internationally. Katie Mora was born and raised in Guelph. She played her minor hockey in Guelph and then played 2 years for the Cambridge Fury in the Provincial Women’s Hockey League. She played for the University of Guelph from 2010-2015 where she served as the captain in her final season. During that same year, she went to Nationals for the first time in over a decade. She was the winner of the University of Guelph Sportswoman of the Year in 2015. Katie graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Kinetics. After she graduated, she began coaching skill development at a local hockey training facility and was Assistant Coach with Guelph Jr. Gryphons Midget AA program. In 2016-2017, Katie joined the University of Guelph Women’s Varsity Team as Assistant Coach, where they won the OUA Championship for the second year in a row. She is currently in her second year as an Assistant Coach.
ANDREA BENETEAU Feeling the Fear and Doing It Anyway: Being the Only Female Firefighter on the Firefighting Team Andrea was Athlete of the Year at her high school, St. Robert CHS in Markham. She played varsity basketball at both the University of Western and Centennial College where she graduated as a paramedic. Andrea worked for Toronto ambulance for 5 years from 1991 until 1996. She then became the first female firefighter in Markham in 1996 and is now the first female fire captain. She has been refereeing basketball since 1999, and refereeing college for 12 years. She has refereed the National Men’s and Women’s team tryouts, 2 college Provincial Championships, and 7 High School Provincial Championships. In the last 4 years, she has been chosen to mentor young officials and to evaluate senior officials.
JULIE SHUM Defining Your Journey: Following in Your Own Footsteps
Julie is a sport enthusiast and traveller, having visited 45 countries so far. Among her journeys, she has hiked Kilimanjaro, met face-to-face with the gorillas in Rwanda, and the lemurs in Madagascar, and completed a 50km ultra-marathon in China. Sports have always been an important part of Julie’s life, spending numerous years figure skating and playing softball. Julie loves to participate in a wide range of sports, from curling and archery, to skiing and taekwondo. Name a sport and she has likely played it, or is eagar to try it. Julie holds both a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Commerce degrees from the University of Windsor. She spent one year studying abroad in Hong Kong focusing her studies on Asian Economics. Julie is an entrepreneur in IT & adventure travel, figure skating coach, and has most recently become the Chapter Lead for Ladies Learning Code in Markham.
PAM DANIS The Circle of Life: A Reflection of the Ebb and Flow of Having Sports in Your Life Pam Danis is a former basketball CIS star, winning 3 National Championships with the University of Winnipeg. She also represented Canada at the Jones Cup. Pam has had an illustrious coaching career as the Head Women’s basketball coach at the University of Manitoba for 11 years, where she was also a faculty member in the faculty of Kinesiology. For 3 of those years, she was the President of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. As an educator and mother, Pam is passionate about the role women play in our world and often finds herself advocating for women through sport and active living.
